CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
The Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware is a thriving academic unit recently ranked #1 in the nation by US News & World Report. The Department includes 32 faculty and professionals including 14 PhD faculty with independent research lines, 180 professional students in the Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) Program, 30 graduate students pursuing a PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science (BIOMS), post-professional residencies, and a 10,000 square foot physical therapy clinic that is open to the public. The Department is part of the College of Health Sciences (CHS), an innovative, interdisciplinary college of more than 3,000 students and 100 faculty. state-of-the-art Health Sciences Complex opened in January 2014 on the University's new Science Technology & Advanced Research (STAR) Campus. The complex brings students, researchers, clinicians, and the community together to address some of the most pressing healthcare questions of our time. The STAR Campus fosters connections to the community, inter-professional training of students, and collaborative research between faculty and clinicians. Under the limited direction of the Director and Associate Director of the DPT Program, the Associate Director of Clinical Education is responsible for all administrative aspects of the clinical education component of the DPT program. This position provides leadership to numerous clinical faculty and professionals by managing the daily operations associated with clinical education, an integral component of the University of Delaware's DPT curriculum. The Associate Director of Clinical Education will be responsible for managing all components related to clinical education, maintaining affiliations with over 300 clinical sites throughout the United States, and placing and monitoring physical therapy students in over 150 internships each year. In addition, the Associate Director of Clinical Education will teach within his/her area of expertise, perform scholarly activity in the area of physical therapy, and participate in service to the Department and/or University.
- Plans, coordinates, facilitates, administers, monitors and evaluates clinical education activities on behalf of the academic program and in coordination with academic and clinical faculty.
- Liaison between the academic institution and affiliated clinical education sites. Communicates to all concerned stakeholders (e.g., the academic institution, clinical education sites, clinical faculty and students) pertinent information related to the educational program, the clinical education site, and healthcare changes affecting clinical practice and education.
- Monitors student progress and assesses performance. Provides guidance and support as required to problem solve and discuss pertinent issues with student(s), clinical instructors (CIs), and/or Center Coordinators of Clinical Education (CCCEs).
- Assigns students to clinical internship sites with consideration to student learning styles and specific opportunities available at a given clinical site.
- Evaluates each clinical education site through student feedback, remote and on-site visits, and ongoing communications; routinely shares this information with academic and clinical faculties. Provides feedback to clinical educators concerning their effectiveness in delivering clinical learning experiences based on student feedback and through direct observations.
- Performs academic responsibilities consistent with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), and with institutional policy.
- Manages administrative responsibilities consistent with CAPTE, federal/state regulations, institutional policy, and practice setting requirements.
- Identifies and utilizes university resources to assist with meeting clinical education program needs or to effectively resolve issues.
- Develops policy and procedures for clinical site selection, utilization, and assessment (e.g., APTA Guidelines for Clinical Education).
- Establishes, develops, and maintains an adequate number of clinical education sites relative to quality, quantity and diversity of learning experiences (i.e., continuum of care, commonly seen diagnoses, across the lifespan, healthcare delivery systems, payers, cultural competence issues) to meet the educational needs of students and the academic program, the philosophy and outcomes of the program, and evaluative criteria set by CAPTE.
- Provides clinical education site development opportunities through ongoing evaluation and assessment of strengths and areas needing further development or action (e.g., in service training, discontinue student placements).
- Collaborates with clinical faculty to promote, coordinate, plan, and provide clinical faculty development opportunities using effective instructional methodologies and technologies.
- Encourages clinical faculty to participate in local, statewide, and national forums designed to foster and discuss issues addressing clinical education.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends in health care and its effect on clinical education and apprises clinical educators and faculty of any changing trends.
- Makes recommendations regarding curriculum to faculty based on feedback from affiliates and analysis of clinical education data collected.
- Represents the Department's DPT program at community events and help to educate the University and larger communities regarding the physical therapy profession.
- Teaches courses in the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program that are consistent with area(s) of expertise.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Masters degree in education, health care, administration or related discipline, Doctorate in Physical Therapy preferred, and five years of clinical teaching and/or clinical coordination experience with a preference for clinicians with outpatient orthopedics background.
- Certification in a clinical specialty area and APTA credentialed clinical instructor certification preferred.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in Delaware.
- Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills is critical.
- Ability to prioritize, plan and organize work independently, while simultaneously working collaboratively with clinical education team.
- Ability to think strategically and to recognize new opportunities.
- Knowledge of educational, management, and adult learning theory and principles preferred.
- Computer skills to include word processing, e-mail, PowerPoint, Excel, and preferably some database experience.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies both within and outside the university.
- Ability to work with students with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession of physical therapy.
- Ability to initiate, administer, assess, and document clinical education program outcomes.
- Ability to travel, as needed.
- Ability to support University and Department policies and procedures.
