The Assistant Director will work with campus stakeholders to implement Office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion, Student Life's, and University vision and goals for creating a diverse, welcoming, and engaging environment for students.
Reporting to the Associate Director for SDI, the Assistant Director is responsible for developing and implementing SDI's advising and student leadership support resources that continues to build SDI as a unit that supports Office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion's efforts to create a culture that promotes student success, a safe and welcoming campus environment, engagement, and to support program efforts consistent with the University's mission.
- Advise racial and ethnic and sexual orientation and gender identity/affinity based registered student organizations, councils, and other undergraduate and graduate student groups (e.g., HOLA, Lavender Programming Board, and Asian & Pacific Islander Student Association).
- Develop and provide support resources for undergraduate and graduate students around race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class standing, first-generation in college status, citizenship status, gender identity, sexual orientation, and additional social identity group categories and their intersecting identities and backgrounds.
- Build and implement strategies for outreach, advocacy, and diversity, equity, and inclusion resources for student leaders to foster a sense of belonging, community, and an inclusive campus culture.
- Implement and maintain SDI's assessment, communications, and advising strategies, to effectively advocate and support students of color, LGBTQ+ students, Undocumented and DACA students, and first-generation students.
- Support the Social Justice Peer Educators' program and advisement of peer educators.
- Advocate on behalf of students, by providing ongoing advocacy in the creation of a campus culture and climate towards diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, by building and maintaining direct connections and rapport with undergraduate and graduate students and their diversity, equity, and inclusion experiences on campus.
- Serve on campus committees to identify and incorporate student diversity, equity, and inclusion experiences and metrics, to support students' sense of belonging and a socially just campus culture and climate.
- Directly supervise student employees.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Master's degree with a minimum of four years of administrative and leadership experience related to advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives in a complex organization.
- Ability to develop, implement and assess strategic initiatives that advance an affirming and inclusive culture.
- Ability to work effectively in diverse teams and leverage strengths of diversity to engage all students around diversity and inclusion.
- Exemplary diversity facilitation and advising skills with students, faculty, and staff.
- Experienced in designing curriculum and plans for diversity training and programs.
- A record of accomplishment as a student advocate and a champion for student success.
- Knowledge of diversity and inclusion theories, frameworks, and concepts; in addition to understanding of complexities within diversity and inclusion content and process.
- Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and administration.
- Effective leadership, team building and collaboration skills.
- Excellent and effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to take initiative and responsibility for projects and development of services.
- Skills in independent judgment to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload with attention to detail.
Assistant Director, Student Diversity Advising serves as the primary lead in diversity, equity, and inclusion advising within the SDI unit to advance student diversity, equity and inclusion learning, growth, and development. In addition, the Assistant Director will work with SDI to advocate, educate, and support students around equity and inclusion and the power of diverse teams and interactions.
