Context of the Job:

The University Student Centers (USC) cultivate a vibrant, inclusive community in which students learn and thrive at the University of Delaware.  As part of the Division of Student Life, the Trabant University Center and the Perkins Student Center serve as the social and educational epicenters for the campus, providing vibrant and intentionally planned engagement opportunities that support USCs’ learning outcomes, but also those of the Division of Student Life and the overall educational aims of UD, as articulated by the General Education purposes and objectives. 

The USC team affords every student a path to contribute to the campus community and heighten their sense of belonging through on-campus employment opportunities, nationally recognized leadership development programs, over 400 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and dynamic and engaging campus events and traditions.  The unique cross-functional nature of the department, which includes facilities, events, student organizations, and leadership programs, necessitates that each staff member pursues cross-unit collaborations and partnerships, as well as assumes some cross-functional duties and roles, such as opening/closing the facility based on event coverage; rotating evening-duty, serving as an advisor to RSOs, and providing programmatic support for department and divisional events.  Collectively and through collaboration, USC team members play a critical role in actualizing the Division of Student Life mission and vision.

Under the general direction of the Communications Specialist II, the Communications Specialist is responsible for producing more than 575 print designs, maintain seven distinct websites, produce content for two outdoor LED signs, manage three separate social media channels, capture photos from 48 events, draft multiple UDaily stories, and create a multitude of promotional and documentary-type videos.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Execute the University Student Centers (USC) communications and marketing plans through extensive project management, distributing tasks to a student creative team and seeing projects through to completion.  Guide students through creative workflow while maintaining strategic goals, brand identity, and best practices of the Division of Student Life and the University of Delaware.
  • Responsible for project management, client and vendor relationship building, directing workflow for student-led projects, maintaining timelines, generating content, assisting with the implementation of marketing strategies, graphic design, web development, and multimedia support for various University Student Centers’ projects. 
  • Utilizing project management software, produce print, graphic, web, editorial, social media, video, programming, and other marketing/advertising efforts by working with Student Centers staff to carry out projects for their respective offices including the Director’s Office, Event Services, Leadership Development, Student Involvement, Registered Student Organizations, and the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Leadership & Learning.
  • Advise and train approximately 20 student staff and interns in creative production skills.  Help to develop and maintain online training manuals and related workshops for student staff and leaders.  Responsible for creating weekly schedules and assignments for student multimedia team. 
  • In partnership with the Communications Specialist II, the Communications Specialist I is responsible for day to day supervision of the Student Centers creative agency and nurturing the growth and development of the program.   
  • Serve as a departmental photographer/videographer to document events and programs hosted by the USC when student multimedia team is unable to cover specific events.
  • Manage the design and scheduling for outdoor LED Signage and digital signage in Perkins Student Center and Trabant University Center.
  • Evaluate, develop, and edit editorial/promotional content and related materials.
  • Manage all project requests and event and program promotions, including initial intake forms, client meetings, production schedules, and final delivery.  Work and act as liaison with external vendors on special projects and production needs.
  • Assist with the implementation of assessment and data collection initiatives to assess engagement and reach across all marketing channels.
  • Ensure compliance with University financial, facilities, branding, and risk management policies and procedures. 
  • Support the work and mission of the Division of Student Life through committees, task forces, and special assignments.  
  • Assist in providing communications-related support during campus emergencies.
  • Serve as an advisor to student organizations and supports colleagues and RSOs in the development and implementation of marketing and promotional strategies for large-scale programs and events
  • Serve on-call for evening events as part of a rotational team to support student staff and provide a new lens and perspective about students, events, and programs to inform training programs and services.
  • Write reports, provide research, and fulfill other projects as assigned by the Communications Specialist II. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Art and Design, Visual Communications, Graphic Design, Multimedia or related field and a minimum of three years of design, print and digital marketing experience in an agency, in-house marketing department, or higher education institution or equivalent combination of experience and/or education. 
  • Experience working in Student Life or Student Affairs marketing, branding, and communications preferred.  Familiarity with event, service, facility, and program promotion beneficial.  Marketing and design experience within a Student Union or Student Center also helpful. 
  • Excellent project management skills.  Demonstrated ability to execute and distribute projects as part of a predefined marketing plan and communications strategy to a creative team and oversee those projects completion.  Advanced knowledge of project management tools and systems required.  Preferred project management experience in Asana, Trello, and or Basecamp. 
  • Must possess outstanding oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, including students and colleagues throughout the University.
  • Talented in Design.  Strong understanding of design principles and multimedia skills, including mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud software.  Skills in both photography and videography as well as editing abilities preferred.  Proficiency in Microsoft or Apple Office tools and database experience required. 
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with social media, digital communications, and analytics are preferred as is experienced with web content and site development.  Familiarity with the WordPress content management system, specifically using the Divi theme is preferred.  Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP is beneficial.
  • Proven ability to work equally well independently and with project teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities; organizational skills, and attention to detail.
