Assistant/Associate Professor Positions in Disaster Science
The University of Delaware (UD) (http://www.udel.edu/) invites applications from talented scholars pursuing interesting questions related to disasters, hazards, risk, and crisis. We are looking to fill multiple tenure-track/tenured positions in Disaster Science at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning September 1, 2020. This search is the second stage of an exciting two-year, university-wide, interdisciplinary cluster recruitment effort to expand research in disaster science, a major emphasis of the University. The first stage of the search resulted in the successful hire of three faculty members who focus on social perspectives of disasters. In this second stage, we seek exceptional engineering and computer science faculty with demonstrated interests in disasters, hazards, risk and crisis, and who would like to work on interdisciplinary teams with social and health scientists. In particular, we seek candidates who focus on crisis informatics and may find a home in the department of Computer and Information Science, as well as candidates who focus on topics related to risk, disasters, or hazards and may find a home in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Faculty members will have a primary tenure-track/tenured appointment in a department at the University of Delaware and join, as core faculty, the world-renowned Disaster Research Center (DRC) (www.drc.udel.edu), the world’s oldest center focused on the social science and management aspects of disaster. UD has several environment- and disaster-oriented programs and research streams in its various colleges, as well as new initiatives in data science and cybersecurity. DRC houses the flagship institution of the William A. Anderson Fund (BAF), an initiative devoted to increasing the participation of students from historically underrepresented populations in disaster science and practice.
We seek scholars who are committed to interdisciplinary research and teaching, diversity and inclusion, and community engagement. Candidates should show experience in or potential for securing external funding and working on integrated interdisciplinary teams. Candidates should hold an earned Ph.D. or other relevant doctoral degrees at the time of appointment.
Civil and Environmental Engineering Position (http://www.ce.udel.edu/)
We will consider a broad range of disaster-related research foci, including, but by no means limited to, probabilistic methods for assessing risk and resilience of infrastructure, development of new engineering models to support decision-making in the disaster context, big data applications in disaster science and crisis response, interactions of humans with the built environment, and humanitarian logistics.
We will consider a broad range of disaster-related research foci, which could include such areas as social media or big data applications in disaster science and crisis response, while relevant research specialties could include human-computer interaction, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, social computing and online organizing, natural language processing, or analyzing information spread.
