CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical laboratory duties in support of instructional and/or research programs. The principal emphasis is on laboratory animal care and husbandry but may also include work in the cage wash area. Independent judgment and a practical understanding of the application of scientific techniques are required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for the daily care and health of laboratory animals in compliance with USDA and PHS policies and guidelines.
• Performs a variety of technical duties involved in conducting or assisting in scientific tests.
• Responsible for the maintenance of animal facilities and equipment in compliance with USDA and PHS policies and guidelines. Administers treatments, including injections, to laboratory animals as prescribed.
• Maintains and operates standard laboratory equipment, which may include cleaning and sterilizing instruments, glassware, cages, etc.
• Maintains necessary records for reports.
• Understands and follows appropriate SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines.
• Responsible for requisition, security, and inventory of animals, supplies and/or equipment.
• Prepares and/or processes samples for analyses.
• Under the direction of the attending veterinarian, facility manager, and the principal investigator(s), maintains animal breeding colonies.
• Performs animal husbandry equipment sanitation and prepares equipment for its reuse in the vivarium.
• Routinely operate, clean, descale, and perform preventative maintenance on the cage washers, autoclaves, and water bottle filler. This includes checking and cleaning filters, probes, screens, spray manifolds, etc.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• At least two years of experience working with laboratory animals is preferred.
• Certification through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science is preferred but not initially required. Must be able to obtain the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within one year of hire date.
• Requires in-depth knowledge of laboratory animal techniques, procedures, instrumentation, and principles of the appropriate science; scientific math including conversions.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to work independently.

• Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.

Occupational Health Exposures:

Daily use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to prevent/minimize any potential exposure(s) to hazardous materials.

Special Requirements:

• With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
• Requires dexterity in handling delicate and/or hazardous materials.
• Ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
• In certain units, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
