The Advanced Materials Characterization lab is the University of Delaware’s premier share instrumentation facility serving more than 15 departments and colleges with over 500 internal and industrial users. The lab currently houses 26 major analytical instruments with a value of over $15 million dollars. These instruments include but no limited to various spectrometers (infrared, raman, inductively coupled mass spec and ion chromatographs), x-ray instrumentation (x-ray diffraction, small angle scattering, x-ray 3d ct scanners, x-ray florescence, and x-ray abortion), thermal analysis (calorimeters, gravimetric) atomic force microscopes (scanning near-field, nano IR), vacuum equipment (pumps, chambers) and laboratory equipment (analytical balances, motors, chillers, and other ancillary laboratory devices, etc.).

Under the general supervision of the Director and lab Scientists, the Laboratory Instrument Specialist will perform highly skilled and complex technical work associated with installing, calibrating, maintaining, and repairing this instrumentation. The ideal candidate will have a broad understanding and experience troubleshooting electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, fluid and gas control systems. In addition, periodically the candidate will be called upon to assist the lab’s users in the daily operation of the analytical instrumentation. Independent judgment is required in the application of established policies and procedures to solve problems associated with this diverse range of instrumentation.


  • Perform maintenance, repair, modification, and installation of sophisticated instrumentation and related electromechanical, vacuum, gas, liquid, and X-Ray generating systems and components.
  • Assist with laboratory preparations for instrument installations/relocation.
  • Maintain a suite of various computer system and local network including windows and Linux.
  • Locate and rectify problems in components of a variety of equipment.
  • Calibrate and maintain mechanical, vacuum, chemical, electrical, and electronic instrumentation controls and measurement instrumentation.
  • Interpret and prepare schematics and/or drawings and obtain service manuals and technical information from manufacturers.
  • Install and test electromechanical devices and related controllers using soldering equipment, hand and power tools and various test equipment.
  • Advise students and staff on the installation and use of research equipment by developing instruction aids when needed.
  • Safely and efficiently execute daily tasks related to calibration and instrumentation activities.
  • Maintain laboratory standards, equipment, and supplies.
  • Develop and improve maintenance procedures.
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing, overhauling, calibrating, and testing a wide variety of industrial instrumentation such as X-Ray instruments, Thermal Analysis Instruments, Mass Specs.
  • Act as the lab primary safety person, maintain the lab safety inventory and ensure the facility operates in a safe manner.
  • Order part as necessary, consumable and repair parts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in science or engineering with 4 years related experience building or repairing mechanical, electromechanical and/or electronic equipment, or 6 years of experience in field service, military technical training, or vocational technical certification with an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skill in maintenance and repair of mechanical, electronic and/or electromechanical equipment in a laboratory environment.
  • Ability to disassemble and reassemble devices containing fragile and/or miniature components and wiring. 
  • Knowledge of fluid and gas fittings, valves, and piping systems. Experience with x-ray producing instruments a plus.
  • Ability to use conventional troubleshooting equipment such as multimeter and various hand tools. Ability to work independently; ability to anticipate and proactively solve problems. 
  • Deep understanding of Windows based computer systems and computer networking.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities at once and work effectively under pressure. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

  • Required to use personal protective equipment, such as safety goggles for ultraviolet radiation, and x-ray generating instruments.

  • Requires the ability to accurately discern colors. 
  • Ability to lift and move, without assistance, equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
