Context of the Job:

As a member of the University of Delaware Sports Performance Team, the Psychological Assistant, Sport is a valued member of our multidisciplinary healthcare team, upholding and embracing the departmental mission of “Inspiring Greatness Together.” The position supports the DACCR department’s vision of providing an excellent student-athlete experience and fostering a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout the program.  

The Psychological Assistant, Sport is responsible for providing counseling and mental performance services to our 21 varsity programs, consulting with our coaches and staff members, and developing and presenting workshops for multiple audiences.

The Psychological Assistant, Sport is also part of the Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD). CCSD is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive student learning and psychological wellbeing program providing a diverse array of services so that students can be more successful in their academic, personal, and career pursuits.  The CCSD is IACS accredited and sponsors three levels of doctoral level training for psychologists including an APA-accredited doctoral internship.

The Center’s efforts focus on helping students reduce psychological symptoms, cope with complicated life events and developmental tasks, improve interpersonal skills and relationships and increase self-knowledge and problem-solving ability. The Center promotes equality and respect for individual and cultural differences, focuses on diversity and inclusion as well as encouraging on-going education regarding issues faced by students in minoritized groups. CCSD is part of the Division of Student Life which contributes to and facilitates critical learning and development within healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities so that all students may thrive at UD and beyond.

Major Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities

• Responsible for Individual clinical care including mental health, general counseling, crisis intervention and sport and performance specific skills.
• Consult and perform outreach on clinical areas specific to student-athletes (e.g., transition to the University, injury, disordered eating, athletic identity, career planning and transition, interpersonal relationships, cultural identity, and substance abuse).
• Provide professional consultation to UD coaches, staff, sports medicine colleagues, and student-athletes regarding student behavior, mental health, performance enhancement counseling and education.

Educational Programming

• Develop and present various workshops for multiple audiences including individual teams and all student athletes, coaches, and staff members.
• Lead educational sessions for coaches, staff, and student-athletes related to best practices and industry leading programming.

Management /Administrative

• Attend staff meetings, professional development, and retreats for CCSD and DACCR.
• Maintain clinical documentation within electronic medical record in accordance with the standards and procedures of the CCSD and ethical guidelines.
• Participate in CARE meetings (collaborative meetings between all Sport Performance areas, Academics, and Head Coaches focusing on Student-Athlete action items to holistically improve performance in the classroom, community, and competitive arena).
• Serve on committees and/or perform special projects.
• Perform job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology is required, preferably from an academic department accredited by the American Psychological Association.
• Completion of an internship in a college or university counseling center, preferably from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association, is strongly preferred.
• Must apply for state licensure as a Registered Psychological Assistant in the state of Delaware within 15 days of accepted offer and obtain within 30 days of start date.
• Must demonstrate an interest in sport psychology, academic preparation in sport psychology, and/or previous supervised experience providing sport psychology services. 
• Previous clinical experience with college students preferred.
• Experience as a college or competitive athlete would be helpful, but not necessary. 
• Organizational skills, follow through, excellent boundaries, openness to feedback, and ability to work as a team member and independently in a responsible manner are all essential to this position.
• Commitment to the highest level of ethical practice within an integrated, multidisciplinary setting.
• Knowledge and professional experience of the personal, emotional, and psychological experience of students. This should be shown through publications, presentations, or skill in expressing such knowledge in person in an interview setting.
• Knowledge and understanding of the development of emerging adults, counseling center administration, organizational and group dynamics, and student development issues and theory. 
• Familiarity with counseling center clinical records and the software platforms utilized.
• Understanding of state of Delaware Child Abuse Reporting law, FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, and trends in legal liability within college counseling center operations.
• Proficiency in computer skills (e.g., Titanium, Point and Click, Excel, word processing, presentation software) and web navigation abilities.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and
• rapidly changing technical environment.
