The University of Delaware Graduate College is responsible for the growth and vitality of UD graduate programs and graduate research. The Graduate College is a complex unit engaging with multiple internal and external constituencies including current and prospective graduate students, professional and continuing studies students, and life-long learning students. The College also works closely with postdoctoral researchers, the Graduate College Council, the Faculty Senate, the Graduate Student Government, the deans' offices of the other eight disciplinary colleges, the program directors of more than 200 graduate programs, alumni, and industry representatives.

The Graduate College is home to a collection of interdisciplinary doctoral, masters and certificate programs that are wholly managed within the college. It is also home to UD’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies, Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, UD Online, the ACCESS Center and Testing Center.

The Director of Communications for the Graduate College manage the strategies, personnel, budgets, projects, deliverables, and day-to-day operations of a marketing and communications group tasked with promoting credit, noncredit, professional development, academic advisement, customized training, UD Online, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute programs to prospective graduate students and non-traditional learners.

Under general direction of the the Senior Director for College Communications with a dotted line reporting to the Dean of the Graduate College, the position involves extensive independent judgment and decision-making.  The Director has full budgetary and supervisory responsibility for the marketing and communications team which is responsible for producing print and electronic publications, digital content and other media to promote the offerings of the College and units.


  • Direct the activities of the Graduate College/PCS marketing and communications team, and empower, lead, and coach team members to achieve objectives.
  • Provide senior-level marketing, communications, customer relationship management, and sales outreach oversight, strategic planning and guidance, goal setting/management, and ongoing support to program managers, project managers, writers/editors, and creative specialists.
  • Ensure compliance with University and departmental policies and procedures and serve as the official communications liaison between the Graduate College and the UD Office of Communications and Marketing and other communication units on campus.
  • Oversee development, production, delivery, and maintenance of print pieces, as well as online materials, content, promotional messages, and various web properties.
  • Set the division and college’s overall marketing, communications, and sales outreach strategy, including building and managing comprehensive forward-looking plans.
  • Lead communication projects by defining and documenting project goals and timelines; tracking and confirming project milestones; and coordinating project resources.
  • Set the division and college’s overall social media strategy.
  • Provide strategic and tactical marketing and promotions support to University of Delaware colleges and divisions seeking to launch continuing education and online education programs.
  • Establish, grow, and manage advertising relationships with print, digital, and broadcast vendors. Meet with prospective and retained program vendors and instructors to set strategic programming objectives.
  • Analyze, improve, and streamline marketing and communications policies, procedures, processes, and technologies. Analyze and report on ROI and adjust strategy and spending as necessary.
  • Provide strategic sales, outreach, and customer relationship management guidance.
  • Keep abreast of industry standards, recommendations, and guidelines in the area of marketing and communications.
  • Maintain succession planning initiatives, including functional cross-training and documenting standard operating procedures.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Technical Writing, English or other relevant discipline with six years of job related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of marketing and advertising, sales, market research, desktop publishing, social media, branding, and advertising are required.
  • Ability to evaluate, develop, and edit marketing plans and correspondence, as well as related materials. Ability to develop and implement short-and-long-term goals and plans.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent supervisory and managerial experience in building, leading, developing, and motivating high-performing teams.
  • Extensive management experience related to organizational strategy, change management, service management, or service excellence initiatives preferred.
  • Experience managing budgets and deadline-oriented projects.
  • Ability to develop compelling, creative, and effective messages and statements.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of publishing methods and writing and editing techniques.
  • Project management skills with ability to lead substantial marketing and communication projects in a variety of media to completion.
  • Proficiency in techniques of electronic publication and web development.
  • Evidence of innovative approaches to presenting information using rapidly changing and developing techniques and technology.
  • Excellent analytic, planning and execution skills.
  • Ability to analyze problems from multiple points of view, lead consensus building within groups with differing views, and translate consensus into action.
  • Experience in developing strategic communications, public relations or marketing, and media relations, preferably within a complex organization.
  • Experience working with digital communications and materials, including the use of analytics tools to measure effectiveness.
  • Experience managing communication support processes, digital media, website development, and the staff involved in these projects.
  • Experience building effective partnerships at the senior level of an organization and collaborating with executives in an intense, dynamic environment.
  • Experience leading collaborative projects across departments and disciplines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, meeting tight deadlines, managing multiple projects and assignments simultaneously, and managing competing priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Extensive management experience related to organizational strategy, change management, service management, or service excellence initiatives preferred.
  • Familiarity with common word processing, spreadsheet, graphic design, presentation, web design, and mass communications tools, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator, WordPress, and Constant Contact.
