Postdoctoral Researcher in Civil and Environmental Engineering

The laboratory of Prof. Julie Maresca ( at the University of Delaware, in collaboration with Prof. Tom Hanson (, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with an expected start date of September 1, 2021.

The project requires a postdoctoral researcher with extensive experience in microbial genetics and some experience in microbial bioinformatics. The researcher will develop genome-editing tools for freshwater Actinobacteria. These tools will enable both the UD research team and others to test the functions of specific genes in nutrient cycling, carbon metabolism, and light capture in freshwater environments. The postdoc will use the genome-editing tools developed to inactivate genes of interest and to construct a mutant library and screen it for genes that promote or decrease fitness under different environmental conditions.

Qualifications:  The candidate will have a PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, or a closely related field. The candidate must have expertise in 1) microbial genetic engineering; 2) molecular biology; 3) ability to disseminate results via peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Additional desirable skills include bioinformatics, biochemistry, or cultivation of environmental microbes.

Responsibilities:  The postdoctoral scientist will characterize light-responsive genetic and metabolic networks in freshwater Actinobacteria and develop genome-editing tools in two representative strains. Freshwater-specific clades of Actinobacteria are ubiquitous and abundant, and mediate nutrient cycling in freshwater environments. The research includes: 1) Optimization of methods for targeted gene inactivation in freshwater Actinobacteria; 2) Development of methods for transposon mutagenesis; and 3) Bioinformatic analysis of existing data sets. The position is for 2 years and includes benefits ( and a competitive salary.

Contact: Applicants should submit cover letter, CV including list of publications, and the names and contact information for three references. Question can be directed to to Dr. Julie Maresca via email (
