CONTEXT OF THE JOB
The Personality & Dysregulation (PD) Lab is housed in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Delaware. The lab is headed by Dr. Naomi Samimi-Sadeh, Principal Investigator (PI). Research in the lab focuses on understanding why people engage in risky, impulsive, and self-destructive behavior, with a special emphasis on elucidating how personality factors and sensitivity/resiliency to life stress contributes to these harmful behaviors. The lab researches mental disorders in adulthood that are marked by severe self-regulation deficits (e.g., psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders) and related public health problems (e.g., suicidal behavior, violence, substance use, criminal behavior). Research in the lab spans biological (neurobiology), psychological (personality traits, emotion-cognition interactions, psychopathology), and environmental (traumatic life events, stress exposure) units of analysis. The lab is currently conducting studies to understand brain networks that contribute to impulsive and harmful behaviors in adults with and without mental illness, particularly externalizing disorders (e.g., antisocial personality disorder, alcohol/substance use disorder).
The Postdoctoral Researcher position is funded via external NIH grant money awarded to the PI. The position is temporary and may be renewed on a 12-month basis, dependent upon available funding and performance. The Researcher will contribute to an ongoing NIMH-funded R01 grant examining brain networks that contribute to impulsive and harmful behaviors in adults with externalizing disorders. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in neuroimaging analysis and programming, along with an interest in impulsivity, self-regulation, and/or externalizing psychopathology (e.g., antisocial personality disorder, alcohol/substance use disorders), although all applications are encouraged. Clinical training is not required, but would be considered an asset. Applications from any area of Psychology are encouraged, especially from individuals who have an interest in externalizing disorders.
The primary duties of the postdoctoral researcher will be to analyze MRI data and write manuscripts for publication. In addition, the researcher will have the opportunity to learn and apply cutting-edge network-analysis methods (e.g., graph theory) to understand the connectomic basis for externalizing pathology.
- Work closely with the PI and graduate students on MRI data collection, processing, and analysis.
- Oversee the quality-control management of the MRI protocol and data processing/ analysis.
- Contribute to the preparation of findings for conference presentations and manuscript publication.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of protocols, procedures, and techniques relating to all aspects of the research.
- Adhering to compliance with human subject protocols.
- Assisting with conducting clinical diagnostic interviews, administering neuropsychological tasks, and running participants through MRI protocols.
- Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Doctoral degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science or related field, with at least one year related experience working in a psychology or neuroscience lab, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Programming expertise (e.g., MATLAB) as well as experience with MRI data collection and analysis (e.g., FSL, FreeSurfer).
- Ability to produce scientific manuscripts and presentations on topics in clinical psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, or a related field.
- Ability to organize and analyze complex datasets.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and supervise graduate and undergraduate students as well as research staff.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions without direct input from a supervisor
- Effective written and oral communication, human relations, and listening skills.
- Ability to follow research methodology and protocol.
- Experience with clinical samples and/or symptoms of psychiatric disorders.
- Experience with the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
