Context of the job:

The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) is a large-scale public-private effort dedicated to supporting the manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals. NIIMBL is a member of the Manufacturing USA network of institutes funded by the federal government to advance United States competitiveness in advanced manufacturing innovation. NIIMBL is established by a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a public/private consortium of a diverse set of member organizations, including industry, academia, non-profit organizations, state governments, and federal agencies. Institutionally at the University of Delaware, NIIMBL reports to the Vice President for Research, Scholarship & Innovation.

NIIMBL’s most substantial and high-profile activities include the execution of technical projects to advance the readiness levels of relevant technologies, assays, and methods related to biopharmaceutical manufacturing. These projects include scopes of scientific work that are multi-organizational and involve experimental studies at a level consistent with best practices found in the biopharmaceutical industry. Many of these projects will be hosted at the University of Delaware in the Ammon-Pinizzotto Biopharmaceutical Innovation Center, which serves as NIIMBL’s headquarters, and houses state-of-the-art laboratory facilities purpose-built for such studies. These projects will involve a diverse set of technologies and approaches and address drug substance, drug product, and analytical needs by the industry appropriate to several types of biopharmaceuticals: vaccines, therapeutic proteins and antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, bispecific antibodies, gene therapy vectors, and cell therapies, among others. 

The Research Associate III will play a key role to ensure these projects stay on track to deliver value to the NIIMBL membership and the industry.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent, innovative experimental research. 
  • Design, develop and implement experimental plans, working with a range of different project teams.
  • Establish experimental protocols, as needed, for project teams working in the NIIMBL facilities.
  • Design and develop new experimental capabilities across different platform processes.
  • Execute studies in collaboration with NIIMBL project teams, some of whom will be visiting researchers from NIIMBL member organizations.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of multiple teams.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Oversee the daily operations of select NIIMBL equipment and laboratory facilities.
  • Train new users on existing equipment within the NIIMBL facilities, as needed, to support NIIMBL projects.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines with at least four years of relevant experience, ideally in a biopharmaceutical GMP environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies.
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Ability to independently develop model concepts and approaches for research.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to develop scientific reports and manuscripts based on original research.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate lab operation reports.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a diverse set of technical teams.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
