CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Student Health Services (SHS) is the primary student health unit on the University of Delaware Campus. Situated within the Division of Student Life, SHS provides essential services and support to students and campus stakeholders to enhance the development of personal and social responsibility and to foster safe, healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities at UD. SHS partners with students and staff to develop vibrant inclusive environments which encourage student success and engagement, a culture of care for all members, values-congruent decision-making, and the cultivation of skills and knowledge so students may become citizens and leaders in our increasingly global society. Staff members support the Mission and Vision of Student Health Services as well as those of the Division of Student Life to ensure student success.

SHS is a free-standing ambulatory care center. This well-equipped facility provides medical treatment and office consultation space for a variety of outpatient services. The SHS also provides medical services in support of the university athletic program in a Sports Medicine Clinic located in the Whitney Athletic Center.

Under general direction, the Nurse II provides and coordinates comprehensive specialty care and services to the student population. The Nurse II operates in a clinical setting, assesses patient and associated needs, develops, and implements intervention plans, and evaluates response. The Nurse II collaborates with other health care providers and/or community services, as appropriate.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Independently obtains detailed health histories and performs physical assessments on a selected patient population; treats acute/chronic medical problems, as per physician approved protocol.
• Utilizes the Electronic Medical Record for scheduling of appointments for patients, charting of encounters and any other documentation regarding the care of the patient. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the computer to complete the Electronic Medical Record.
• Reviews medical records including laboratory results. Notifies the primary physician, as appropriate, regarding unusual or unexpected events/problems requiring direct physician consultation.
• Provides patient education within area of specialty to patients, families, health care staff, faculty and students.
• Interacts with office staff related to appointments, fielding patient questions, outside referrals, insurance issues, etc.
• Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
• Maintains supplies in areas of work, i.e., exam rooms, clinic room, Inpatient, surgical suite, or Immunization room.
• Performs clinical quality improvement studies.
• Assists with training of new staff, medical residents and nursing students.
• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, annual mandatory training, current literature, in­-service meetings, and workshops.
• Acts as a liaison between SHS and University of Delaware departments, staff, parents, and community.
• Establishes and maintains verbal and written communications with other members of the health team.
• Evaluates equipment readiness, such as EKG machine, nebulizer, pulse ox, BP machines, clinitek, accu-check, crash carts and contents and other items as needed.
• Reviews and requests to order patient handouts and pamphlets.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• State of Delaware Licensed Registered Nurse (or RN licensed in a compact state), and minimum of three (3) years’ experience.
• Ability to react effectively in emergency situations.
• Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures, CPR, emergency medical procedures, patient care charts and patient histories, drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration and primary care principles and practices.
• Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
• Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments and make administrative and procedural decisions.
• Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.
• Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures, accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
• Knowledge of JCAHO or AAAHC accreditation and certification requirements.
• Must maintain professional competence through participation with other members of the health team and with other departments of the University and the community.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to lift average-weight objects up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to stand and/or walk for more than four (4) hours per day.
• Yearly tuberculosis screening. If positive, proof of absence of disease that is acceptable to SHS Medical Director and is consistent with the ADA.
• Documentation of immune status to Varicella and Hepatitis B.
• Successful completion of criminal background check.
