Context of the Job:

Under the limited direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the EHS Education and Training Designer is responsible for the development and implementation of education & training programs utilized by university faculty, staff, and students. The position works collaboratively with EHS functional areas/subject matter experts to provide management and leadership in the development of training, documents and manuals, and website materials to support the mission and goals of the department. Under general direction, the Education and Training Designer plans, arranges own tasks, and applies standard policy or procedure to routine problems or duties without the benefit of specific guidelines. The ideal candidate will have experience with training development, record management, technical writing, website content maintenance and development, and various training delivery methodologies.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with EHS Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to plan and write content for training programs using instructional and distribution methods (online, classroom, or blended) that best suit the content.
  • Learning strategies include PowerPoint, video, and online delivery methods.
  • Work with EHS Outreach Team to develop materials such as posters, newsletter, and social media content for delivery and use by the team.
  • In conjunction with EHS SMEs, develops and maintains EHS documents, protocols, and program manuals.
  • Design and develop performance-focused training content that engages our learners.
  • Design and develop both self-directed and/or instructor-led training content.
  • Help maintain existing learning materials to ensure the content remains complete and relevant.
  • Create engaging and valid trainee evaluation tools that prove successful knowledge transfer.
  • Help maintain existing programs to ensure the content remains complete and relevant.
  • Work with the Laboratory Safety Specialist to maintain SciShield training management program records.
  • Work with the Laboratory Safety Specialist to prepare and distribute safety training compliance communication, including training reminders, status reports, and annual reports.
  • Perform needs analysis and evaluate existing documentation to identify the most appropriate training approach and content to meet the demands of the learning objectives and audience.
  • Work with EHS SMEs to develop and maintain department web resources.
  • Maintain hazardous material training records and documentation for EHS department staff.
  • Perform job-related duties as assigned.
  • Analyze and interpret data, prepare reports, plan, and evaluate programs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training and development programs and revises program objectives, instructional design, and methods as needed.



  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of related administrative or education experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience designing and developing both self-directed and/or instructor-led training content.
  • Knowledge of performance-based instructional theories and adult learning principles.
  • Experience creating assessments based on learning and performance objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing training materials in all modalities.
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders, SMEs, front-line managers, and frontline employees.
  • Ability to use web development tools to support online training program offerings preferred.
  • Experience with webpage development preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of standard business software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills, teaching and facilitation skills.
  • Analyze and interpret policies, procedures, and data to make independent decisions and judgments in keeping with the position level.
  • The ability to interact with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds is required.
