CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The College of Engineering (COE) at the University of Delaware is home to seven academic departments devoted to building a community of problem-solvers focused on challenges associated with sustainability, energy, health care and the environment.  Ranked as one of the top 50 Engineering Colleges in the United States, last year we welcomed over 3,700 College of Engineering students to campus, including nearly 700 new undergraduate students and 200 new graduate students.

Our almost 200 person internationally recognized faculty includes named professors, National Academy of Engineering members, NSF and DOD faculty career and young investigator award winners, and University teaching award recipients. World-renowned initiatives led by college faculty include college-based research centers and university-based research centers and institutes, all of which provide a fertile training ground for future engineers.

Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Engineering, the Associate Director for Undergraduate Recruitment is a key member of the Undergraduate Student Services team, most notably responsible for creating, implementing, and overseeing the recruitment and admissions activities of the undergraduate programs. There is a strong need to expose prospective students to the breadth of engineering and computer science degree programs offered at UD, the career choices they can lead to, and to recruit a competitive and diverse class of freshmen and transfer, including international, students each year.  We seek a dynamic candidate; someone dedicated to developing strategies to increase our applicant pool; someone who can help guide prospects to find their passion; someone who can connect students to majors that have been proven to lead to successful careers in engineering and computer science and to post-graduate degree programs.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement and co-ordinate high-quality and high-impact yield activities for students who are admitted to the College of Engineering.
  • Manage all aspects of COE’s extensive recruitment processes.  Oversee all recruitment, yield activities and events including the logistics for visitation programming of COE facilities. Lead the development and implementation of data driven strategies, programs and events to effectively recruit and yield students for the college.
  • Work in collaboration with the leadership and staff of UD Admissions to build a diverse and competitive freshmen/transfer class each year.
  • Work in collaboration with the COE Communications and Marketing team to develop a yearly communications plan for prospective students through all stages of the recruitment and admission process.  Develop annual talking points and value propositions to be used by COE administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Lead/manage major open house events for COE, including those organized by UD Admissions and COE specific events. Design or adopt data driven tools for targeted recruiting and for assessing the effectiveness of COE recruitment strategies. Use data to inform decisions about recruiting activities. Analyze and interpret these data and report the results to COE leadership.
  • Advise department chairs on program specific strategies/opportunities to expand the pool of applicants in their programs.
  • Build relationships with stem-themed high school teachers, community college advisors, community groups, and STEM affiliated clubs.
  • Counsel prospective students and their families both in-person and virtually regarding undergraduate degree programs and educational opportunities in engineering and computer science.  Engage with students and families during campus visits and serve as their liaison throughout the admission cycle.
  • Host high school groups and clubs on campus, give in-person or virtual presentations to prospective student groups. Recruit at college fairs.
  • Manage COE’s Ambassador Program, a volunteer group of 20+ undergraduate COE students that assist in promoting the college via recruitment and public-relations events. Provide strategic recruitment, selection, training, mentoring, and supervision of this group.
  • Comply with university policies, procedures, and best practices regarding protecting data and following UD data governance rules.
  • Supervise academic program manager focused on supporting research program outreach activities.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of higher education.
  • Advanced working knowledge of student recruitment at the college level and the challenges of yielding a class.
  • Friendly and approachable individual; self-claimed people person with good sense of humor, strong customer service, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask; strong initiative, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively and independently and as a team member with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Comfortable and effective at presenting to small and large groups.
  • Ability to gather data, analyze information, and prepare and present reports.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Knowledge of event programming trends and effectiveness for student recruitment and admissions.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor teams of undergraduates including organizing and scheduling work assignments.
  • Proficient computer skills including use of presentation, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Experience with Slate or another CRM platform preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some evening and weekend work will be required throughout the year.
  • Some travel may be required.  Valid driver’s license required.
