CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
Interviews and advises students regarding information, procedures and academic requirements of graduate programs within the Department of Computer & Information Sciences. Assists students in exploring careers, evaluating academic abilities, and setting goals. Prepares advising materials such as student information, advising guides and recruitment materials. Presents academic information to orientation groups and potential students and parents.
- Assesses the student's stage of development (academic, career, and personal) and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks; assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
- Advises students on academic, career and personal issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications; if needed, refers students to counseling services; sets up an action plan for students to explore alternative careers and related majors.
- Identifies options for students to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and amendments to students’ programs of study; assists students in completion.
- Monitors academic progress of students; analyzes progress reports from instructors; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance; communicates findings to administrators.
- Maintains student files and records; documents all pertinent student information; updates computerized information system regarding changes to student status.
- Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures; participates in preparation of orientations and presents academic information to new students during orientation.
- Checks various forms for accuracy such as grade checks, overload petitions, curriculum changes; assists students in their completion.
- Identifies options for student to satisfy specific degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and adjustments to a student's program of study.
- Evaluates transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program.
- Assists in recruitment of potential students by advising them of general academic requirements of a specific college; describes courses; disseminates information regarding registration procedures; prepares recruitment packets.
- Gathers and/or calculates necessary information such as GPAs or enrollment statistics; prepares various reports as requested.
- Assists students with admission and registration/provides guidance in course selection in keeping with the students’ interests, values and abilities.
- Review and submit edits to the UD Course Catalog to reflect all changes in graduate course descriptions.
- Manage certificate and degree programs, awards and student organizations.
- Assist with forms, policies, degree requirements, PhD prelims, qualifying exams, defenses, funding, and personal and career goals.
- Process funding webforms.
- Manage Graduate program website content with COE-IT.
- Plan/host new student orientations.
- Coordinate Fellowship nominations and completion.
- Contribute to graduate program committee and graduate admissions committee.
- Utilize SLATE for applications and admissions.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree and three years’ academic advising experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in student personnel, college counseling or related field preferred.
- Experience in program coordination.
- Ability to grasp, retain, and disseminate an extensive and varied body of information.
- The ability to exercise sound judgment and employ decision-making skills.
- Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
- Knowledge of graduate academic standards and judicial policies governing cheating and academic misconduct, suspension, and/or expulsion and student recruitment and retention issues.
- Ability to communicate with students the course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements.
- Advanced working knowledge of graduate academic recruitment and advisement policies, procedures, systems, regulations, and standards at the university level is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of marketing and market research.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
- Effective leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. with experience working productively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Proficient computer shills including use of presentation software, Excel and Word.
- Experience with the University’s student records system (UDSIS), development database (Advance), Slate and accounting system (UDataGlance and PeopleSoft) is preferred.
