CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction of the Associate Chair and the Business Administrator, the Academic Coordinator manages undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants in Computer and Information Sciences in support of the teaching mission of the Department. In consultation with departmental faculty, the Academic Coordinator provides academic support services that help scale the Department’s educational activities. Responsibilities include handling the TA selection process, assigning TA workloads, managing TA activities and operations, developing and administering a training curriculum for TAs, and generating reports. In addition, the Academic Coordinator works with other University offices and departments in the execution of these functions.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the teaching mission of the department and provide services that would help scale the program; primary duties relate to managing Graduate and Undergraduate Teaching Assistants.
  • Assign Graduate and Undergraduate teaching assistants to appropriate courses based on course requirements, TA skills, and instructor requests while ensuring that TA workloads are properly balanced.
  • Identify appropriate candidates for Undergraduate Teaching assistants.
  • Generate reports on TA workloads to assist future TA assignments.
  • Work with instructors to ensure TAs are providing appropriate instruction. This includes regularly observing and evaluating TA performance and arranging appropriate training or making other recommendations regarding individual TAs.
  • Manage the onboarding process for TAs.
  • Manage the payroll/timesheet process for all TAs.
  • Develop and maintain records of individual TA performance metrics.
  • Develop and administer a training curriculum for department TAs in practical post-secondary educational techniques and practices.
  • Develop and administer training, policies, and procedures to foster excellence in the department’s teaching assistants program.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree with appropriate experience or training in education and a relevant technical field such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information systems.
  • Experience in Education Technology. 
  • Ability to work closely with diverse individuals.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical users.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of educational practice, especially related to Computer Science.
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
