Context of the Job:
The Research Technician I will work in the Biomedical Engineering Department of the University of Delaware as part of a collaborative research group studying musculoskeletal tissue biomechanics. The main objectives of this group are to propose and carry out innovative research projects regarding the characterization and treatment of injured and degenerative disorders of musculoskeletal tissues and to to support basic and preclinical musculoskeletal research throughout the University community by providing research and technical services through the Delaware Center for Musculoskeletal Research. Funding for this work is provided by the National Institutes of Health (R01 AR050052 “Disc mechanics and altered loading in degeneration” and 1P20GM139760 “Delaware Center for Musculoskeletal Research”). The Research Technician I will support these objectives by performing experimental procedures in the laboratory, analyzing data, maintaining laboratory equipment, and assisting with the design & development of new methods and equipment. Most work will be performed independently with minimal direct supervision, but in close coordination and cooperation with others.
- Prepare biological tissue specimens and other materials (such as chemical mixtures) for mechanical testing and other experiments.
- Perform mechanical tests of biological and industrial specimens according to established protocols.
- Build devices (for example, clamps, baths, and supports) to facilitate mechanical tests.
- Label image regions in video, photographs, and micrographs using a digital pen tablet.
- Process experimental data using graphical and command-line software.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
- Assist with design and construction of new laboratory equipment and troubleshooting and repair of old equipment.
- Prepare archives, reports, presentations, and other documentation related to the above activities as needed for integration with other team members' work.
- Clearly document and communicate details regarding protocol deviations, equipment malfunctions, and other unexpected events for retrospective analysis.
- Find and use technical information from equipment manuals and other documents.
- Investigate open-ended problems and communicate discoveries, unknowns, and potential next steps.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, plus either two years’ experience in technical or scientific work or two years’ training (such as an associate degree) in a technical field.
- Ability to work independently from oral and/or written instructions, assume responsibility and take initiative to perform tasks with little direct supervision.

Occupational Exposures: Frequently required to use personal protective equipment (such as safety glasses, gloves, lab coat) to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
Special Requirements: Ability to lift 50 pounds and use step stools to access shelves above head height. Dexterity in handling delicate and/or hazardous materials. Must be comfortable with handling specimens of biological origin, which may include blood, animal carcasses, and human cadaver tissue.
