Associate in Arts Program, Elementary Teacher Education  

 

The School of Education (SOE) at the University of Delaware invites applications for a full-time continuing track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to coordinate and teach in the elementary teacher education (ETE) option within the Associate in Arts Program (AA) in Wilmington. The start date of the position is September 1, 2022.

Qualifications and Responsibilities:

We are seeking candidates with expertise in education or a related field and the ability to teach in one of the AA-ETE program’s regular course offerings. The two-year AA-ETE option has around 50 students and is a component of the SOE’s ETE program which admits 120-150 students a year (AA-ETE students can transition after their sophomore year to the Newark campus). The successful candidate will be a SOE continuing track faculty member under the supervision of the SOE Director. Continuing track faculty have opportunities to pursue research, are eligible for promotion and sabbaticals, and receive full and generous benefits as part of their compensation package.

Required Qualifications: A doctorate in education or a related field; the ability to teach in one of the AA-ETE program’s regular course offerings (viz., introduction to teacher education, literacy, mathematics education, special education, educational psychology, education’s social context); and the ability to create and support diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in all aspects of their work. There is a range of acceptable teaching combinations commensurate with the program’s ongoing staffing needs.

Preferred Qualifications: Relevant and significant institutional leadership experience; the ability to collaborate with faculty and staff across content areas and departments; experience with research-based instructional strategies for heterogeneous populations, community-engaged instruction, and culturally relevant and responsive teaching practices; experience with student recruitment in high schools; and experience with establishing and/or maintaining partnerships between high schools and colleges.

Responsibilities: In addition to the course teaching, responsibilities include: recruiting and orienting prospective students (including area school visits); maintaining program student records, handbooks and websites; registering students for classes; identifying and supervising early field experiences in local schools and other organizations; advising all AA-ETE students and preparing sophomores for their transition to the Newark campus; and holding office hours for students. Administrative duties include coordinating classroom and other space needs with the overall AA Wilmington Faculty Coordinator; communicating with the Associate Director for Undergraduate Studies on program and student issues; setting up the schedules and securing instructors for offered AA-ETE courses; participating in both AA and SOE faculty meetings; and completing additional tasks as assigned by the SOE Director. 

About the Associate in Arts Program: The AA Program at the University of Delaware, with campuses in Wilmington, Dover, and Georgetown, is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary associate degree program that includes coursework in humanities, history, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, and languages. AA students constitute a racially and socioeconomically diverse body of learners, the majority of whom go on to pursue majors in all seven colleges on the University of Delaware’s main campus. AA students enjoy an uninterrupted transition from the AA to a bachelor’s degree program in the junior year.

About SOE: The School of Education, housed within the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), has over 60 full-time and jointly appointed faculty, nearly 600 undergraduate majors and minors, and 360 graduate students. The SOE offers an undergraduate major in elementary teacher education (the AA-ETE being a pathway within this major) and undergraduate minors in educational studies, educational technology, and race, culture, and equity in education. The School also supports several robust graduate programs at both the master’s and doctoral level.

Faculty in the SOE are highly active researchers in areas spanning special education, literacy and language, mathematics education, the science of learning, sociocultural approaches, and educational policy. Faculty research is externally supported from numerous foundations and from federal agencies such as the Institute for Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. In the last several years, faculty have garnered external funding exceeding $21 million, and the college ranks among the top nationally in obtaining federal support for education research. SOE faculty are recognized for their contributions to national conversations about critical educational issues, lead organizations working to address those issues, and provide a range of supports to the agencies at the front lines of improving educational opportunities and outcomes. The faculty are a methodologically diverse and collegial group of nationally and internationally known scholars.

About CEHD: The College of Education and Human Development comprises two academic department, the SOE and Human Development and Family Sciences, as well as several centers for research, education, and service. Of particular relevance to the AA-ETE program, CEHD houses the Delaware Center for Teacher Education, which supports education students in the student teaching and certification processes.
