Postdoctoral Researcher, Center for Composite Materials

Context of the job:

The University of Delaware’s Center for Composite Materials (UD-CCM) is an internationally recognized center of excellence for interdisciplinary research, education, and technology transfer providing world-class research to both industry and government sponsors.

We are seeking postdoctoral researchers to conduct research on highly aligned short fiber composites (TuFF) at UD-CCM. Researchers will conduct modeling & simulation of short fiber composites for mechanical property predictions and manufacturing process development, establish mechanisms through key experiments in the lab and validate results with coupon and sub-component testing.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop microstructure-process-property relationships for highly-aligned short fiber composites using advanced numerical methods and FE simulations
  • Parametric studies on structure-property relationships to establish key microstructure parameters and their effects on performance
  • Characterization of input properties for structure/property models
  • Experimental design to validate load transfer mechanisms, manufacturing process mechanisms
  • Coupon level testing for property prediction validations and material constitutive law development
  • Sub-component testing for post-formed property measurements and model validation
  • Present work including theory, approach, results, and conclusions at review meetings; report findings via government publications (technical reports), peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Permanent resident or US citizen required
  • Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • 1-2 years’ experience preferred, may be waived for PhD thesis in related aspects
  • Experience with analytical and numerical modeling and simulation tools for fiber reinforced composites, preferably as part of PhD thesis
  • Experience with polymers, fibers, composites, and composite manufacturing processes
  • Experience/aptitude for experimental work such as: prepreg layup and autoclave processing, composite mechanical testing to ASTM standards, and composite microstructure characterization
