The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware invites applications for a Continuing Track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will teach in our innovative Mathematical Sciences Learning Laboratory (MSLL). MSLL employs active learning and other evidence-based teaching strategies, principles of continuous improvement, learning technologies, and a collaborative instructional team with the goal of studying and improving teaching and learning in introductory college mathematics courses (e.g., Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus).
The anticipated workload for this position is primarily devoted to teaching (9-12 credits per semester), with the remainder devoted to service and scholarship. The Continuing Track (CT) is UD’s permanent, non-tenure track career path. CT faculty enjoy contracts that increase in length over time, as well as many of the same benefits as tenure-track and tenured faculty, such as identical titles, a parallel promotion track, sabbaticals, and shared faculty governance.
QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: We seek candidates committed to teaching introductory mathematics courses using active learning strategies and collaborating with teams of instructors to teach, study, and improve introductory college mathematics courses.
- A doctoral degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field; for candidates whose doctoral degree is not in mathematics, a minimum of 12 credits in graduate-level mathematics is required;
- Strong commitment to and potential for excellence in teaching;
- Strong interest in teaching introductory college mathematics courses (e.g., Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus);
- Strong commitment to teaching a diverse population of students;
- Strong commitment to, and knowledge of, active learning strategies and other evidence-based pedagogical practices;
- Strong commitment to collaborating with other instructors to study and improve mathematics teaching and learning;
- A record of scholarship and plans for continued engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning or other research areas.
- Experience as the instructor of record for introductory college mathematics courses;
- Experience and/or ability to teach mathematics to a diverse student population;
- Experience collaborating with other instructors to improve teaching and learning;
- Experience using active learning and other evidence-based teaching strategies, as well as technology, to support student learning;
- Experience conducting scholarship of teaching and learning.
Primary responsibilities will include:
- Teaching introductory mathematics courses (e.g., Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus);
- Implementing, studying, and refining shared curricula for introductory mathematics courses; and
- Collaborating closely with a team of instructors to study and improve teaching.
