CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the limited direction of the Senior Associate Director, Employer & Alumni Engagement, the Assistant Director, Internships & Career Experiences, is an active professional on the Employer & Alumni Engagement Team (EAET) within the UD Career Center (UDCC). The UDCC collaborates with academic, Division of Student Life, and administrative units on institution-wide student and postgraduate success initiatives by integrating life design, career education and preparation, professional connections, internships, career experiences, and mentoring into the academic and co-curricular undergraduate and graduate student experience and by partnering with employers, alumni, and workforce development organizations. We are successful when ALL Blue Hens achieve clear outcomes and ROI from their UD education and thrive in life, work, and academics during their time at UD and beyond.

The Assistant Director will achieve the strategic priorities of the UDCC and EAET. Primarily, they will design, implement and lead, with their counterpart on the UDCC’s Career Development and Campus Engagement Team, the UD Career Access & Mobility Initiative (UDCAMI), an institution-wide, comprehensive career readiness program dedicated to advancing the long-term professional success of Black, Latinx, Indigenous and underrepresented Asian American and Pacific Islander students, and students from low-income and first-generation backgrounds at UD. They will partner with employers, industry associations, UD’s Office of Development & Alumni Relations and Office of Institutional Equity, University Studies, AAP, student support units, and RSOs to design and implement career success strategies that meet the goals of UDCAMI.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Internships & Career Experiences Leadership & Collaboration

  • Achieve the strategic priorities of the Employer & Alumni Engagement Team (EAET)
  • Design, launch and lead the UD Career Access & Mobility Initiative (UDCAMI)
  • Implement and execute a strategic approach to develop relationships with employers committed to diverse, equitable, and inclusive hiring and employee advancement and retention practices.
  • Develop, implement and assess UDCC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives by offering specialized consulting and training for employers, developing a diverse and robust talent pipeline.
  • Oversee diversity and equity-focused partnerships with industry and professional associations, UD alumni organizations, employers, and governmental agencies
  • Collaborate and consult with leadership and staff in the Office Development & Alumni Relations, the Office of Institutional Equity, Division of Student Life, Provost’s Office, Enrollment Management, student support units, and student organizations on career access and equity priorities and initiatives.                                                                                                                                             
  • Pursue change in UD and UDCC policies, procedures, services, and programs that perpetuate inequities in students’ ability to pursue and achieve postgraduate success.
  • Engage in regular strategy and operational meetings with UDCC leadership and team members.
  • Serve on university committees, boards, task forces, and cross-functional teams as requested.

Project & Program Management

  • Lead and provide campus-wide consultation on the launch and management of major job shadow, internship, mentorship, career treks, and other experiential programs for target populations through UDCAMI
  • Manage employer and alumni outreach, cultivation, participation, and retention for recruiting, internships, and experiential programs.
  • Develop and ensure the delivery of antiracist, culturally responsive, equity-centered, and scalable career education, programming, experiences, and initiatives.
  • Utilize Development & Alumni Relations alumni, parent, and constituent tracking systems, Advance, and DAR portal to support and manage alumni engagement efforts.
  • Manage data to document Handshake's phone calls, actions, and employer engagement activities.
  • Directly supervise student worker(s), as necessary.

Assessment

  • Engage in continuous improvement to foresee and respond to changing needs of students and the workplace.
  • Analyze, understand, and leverage qualitative and quantitative data to develop, implement, and manage UDCAMI programs.
  • Establish, operationalize, assess and act upon learning and success outcomes and metrics.
  • Identify and analyze recruiting, internship completion, post-UD employment data patterns, and develop/seek solutions/opportunities for equity-related discrepancies.
  • Ensure the UDCC and its program, services, and operations are inclusive, antiracist, and equitable.
  • Research recruiting, hiring, workforce development, career access and equity best practices, and workplace competency trends and initiate new and enhanced career programs.
  • Utilize student, recruiter and alumni focus groups and advisory groups.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of job-related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to communicate and implement a strong leadership vision for career access and mobility.
  • Experience and expertise as a systems thinker and problem solver.
  • Extensive project and program management experience leading to quantifiable results and goal attainment.
  • Broad knowledge and experience implementing current and emerging DEI best practices for recruiting, hiring, and career development.
  • Ability to establish, maintain and enhance effective and productive relationships with a diverse  range of external and internal stakeholders, including recruiters, alumni, corporate, community and government leaders, and UD administrators.
  • Ability and proven track record in meeting goals dependent upon internal and external partnerships.
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration, presentation, reporting, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience using a social justice lens in planning and problem-solving.
  • Commitment to students and maintaining an inviting, inclusive, and equitable office ethos and environment.
  • Effective coalition builder.  
  • Ability to analyze and utilize data, assessment tools, career information, and analyze and use employment and higher education trends.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and act with discretion.
  • Ability to take risks, assess and shift priorities and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to utilize Handshake (or similar CRM platform), MS office suite, web editing, and social media technologies for marketing, analysis, and work product.
  • Ability to travel and work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
