CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
The Delaware Biotechnology Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit at the University of Delaware. The vision is to create a better future through leadership in life science research at the University of Delaware. Most, but not all, of the Institute's activities involve molecular and cellular studies of living systems and most, but not all, of the activities involve partnerships with other institutions in the region. The Institute’s mission is to promote research, education, and technology transfer for biotechnology applications to the benefit of the environment, agriculture, and human health.
The Institute houses a number of research core facilities - DNA Sequencing, Bio-imaging, Bioinformatics, and has a very large installed base of Linux servers with a number of Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows desktop/laptop computers. Under limited direction of the Manager, Institute Computing Operations, the CSS II will provide system administration of installed computing resources and will collaborate closely with affiliated faculty members, staff, and graduate students to propose and implement hardware and software solutions applying computation analysis to address issues in genomics, bioinformatics, and proteomics.
- Support research computing systems for institute-affiliated faculty and research facilities: install, maintain and administer operating systems, monitor performance, install and support software.
- Support high-performance Linux computing systems and clusters, configure, install and monitor Linux operating systems.
- Support bioinformatics and genomic software on Linux platform - installation, configuration, and administration.
- Administer and maintain DBI’s LDAP-based user directory system.
- Support and administer web servers, and database systems.
- Work with researchers to assist with analysis of sequencing and genomic data (training provided as needed).
- Support - diagnose, troubleshoot, and configure - laptops, desktops, tablets, and other computing devices for staff, researchers, and faculty
- Provide programming support for researchers. Instruct users on efficient uses of computing resources.
- Train researchers and staff in order to make the most effective use of computing resources to achieve their administrative, research, education and scholarship goals.
- Support the center’s shared resources (printers, schedulers, monitoring, displays).
- Supports backup and recovery of instrument-associated computers/network devices.
- Provides advice and assistance on computer and network interfaced technologies in support of DBI activities and mission.
- Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in life science, engineering, or computer science and two years of job-related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in the use of Linux command-line environment, and basic UNIX/Linux system administration and troubleshooting are highly desired skills.
- Experience with desktop computing environment and with Mac OS and MS Windows operating systems is essential.
- Knowledge of relational database configuration, and management, experience with web servers, and familiarity with high-performance computing are helpful.
- Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Special requirements: This position may involve the replacement and/or relocation of computer equipment and servers. The CSS II must be willing and able to lift and move, without assistance, computing equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Availability outside of normal working hours for emergencies related to Departmental computer infrastructure
