Under the general direction of the CANR Assistant to the Dean and Director of Communications, the Events Manager develops a comprehensive strategy to prioritize, organize, and market CANR events to engage the internal and external community and further the mission of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and its partners. These activities have University and community-wide impact as the Events Manager engages with high-level donors, alumni, faculty, staff, students, government officials, industry and agency partners, and the broader community. The Events Manager coordinates, plans, organizes, and designs a variety of internal and external-facing CANR events by developing event plans and timelines, advising invested parties, arranging for facilities, food service, equipment, and other events-related responsibilities. The Manager serves as the liaison between the Dean’s Office and academic departments and centers, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, other central University offices, and external partners to develop and promote events and activities that complement CANR strategic initiatives.


  • Develops an annual events plan to engage the CANR community of faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and community/business partners to highlight the impact of the College’s work and advance strategic initiatives. 
  • Develops, plans, implements, and supervises all special events for the CANR Dean's Office, to include events such as Ag Day; Celebrating Success and Achievement Awards Banquet; Dean’s Advisory Board meetings; Town Halls; Ribbon Cuttings; Farm-to-Table events for high-level donors and government officials; strategic academic department, program, and center events to include events such as Blue and Gold Saturday’s, Decision Days, Convocation, etc.; and internal CANR gatherings and celebrations.
  • Works closely with the Office of Development & Alumni Relations to coordinate and plan central events (e.g., Homecoming, Alumni Weekend, Alumni Awards, etc.).
  • In conjunction with support staff, coordinates appropriate facilities, equipment, determination of speaker arrangements, catering selection, technical support needs, staffing coordination, logistical requirements, and publicity for these events. 
  • Facilitates events on-site, ensuring that event operations are cost effective and in accordance with goals and objectives; resolves or manages resolution of problems and issues as they arise.
  • Develops event budgets and manages payment of event expenses within that budget. Prepares a statement of expenses, cost analysis, and initiates and oversees billing process for each event. Ensures that services are delivered appropriately.
  • Corresponds with honorees and special guests to include high ranking personnel, both external and internal. 
  • Serves as a liaison between contractors, organizers, faculty, and administrators with regards to all facets of the logistical operations support of multiple programs and events. 
  • Develops and implements practices, policies, and procedures consistent with those of the University relating to events and special projects to ensure a successful outcome. 
  • Manages communications and announcements with donors and alumni, to include the Dean’s Acknowledgements and congratulatory notices.  Maintains database and donor records. 
  • Manages and coordinates conferences hosted by the CANR Dean’s Office and/or Units, including creating websites and registration, identifying venues, logistics, lodging, etc.
  • Oversees public relations and travel for VIPs. 
  • Recruits and manages the Ag Day Student Leader Team members.
  • As part of the Dean’s Office Staff, provides support for and/or manages complex projects and initiatives in the Dean’s office, requiring advanced administrative skills, confidentiality and tact. 
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related discipline, and three years of special event planning experience, or equivalent combination of education and related experience. 
  • Ability to plan, produce, and market a variety of large public events.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently, and skill in organizing resources and establishing/adjusting priorities in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with particular attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, anticipate issues, and proactively seek resolutions.
  • Must have excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and communication skills when working with faculty/staff, alumni, donors, community members, and University administration as well as people of all ages with diverse backgrounds. 
  • Ability to assess contract compliance and product/service quality.
  • Skills in budget preparation and fiscal management as well as technical proficiency with Microsoft software.
  • Understanding of academic and University policies, as well as current and emerging University relations issues and trends.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to use social media, web development, and other engagement tools preferred.
  • Experience with creating email campaigns, marketing events, and graphic design a plus.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
