Context of the Job:

Under limited direction of the Associate Vice President (AVP), the Compensation Manager is responsible for overseeing the compensation unit and provides leadership in planning, developing, and administration of classification and compensation programs. Serves as lead administrator, assuring the thorough conduct of audits, submission of accurate reports, and that University compensation programs are consistently administered in compliance with policies and government regulations. The Compensation Manager remains current on compensation trends in order to be responsive to University goals and competitive practices.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Manages the compensation unit including supervision of assigned staff.  Provides consultation and advice to the AVP on compensation matters. 
  • Leads the development, implementation and administration of compensation programs, policies and procedures.
  • Manages survey participation, job evaluation and incentive plan design
  • Ensures that the pay and salary structure comply with changing state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Partners with managers to help develop promotion and retention strategies for existing employees. Provides advice on pay decisions, policy and guideline interpretation.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of existing compensation policies, guidelines and procedures recommending plan revisions that are consistent with compensation trends and university objectives.
  • Performs special projects such as organizational compensation studies and restructures.
  • Conducts research to ensure competitive salary ranges. Oversees the employee merit program.
  • Establishes best practices in the job analysis and compensation process to ensure appropriate market and internal equity review. 
  • Provides consultation and support in the writing and maintaining of accurate job descriptions.
  • Generates ad-hoc reports and analyzes statistical data.
  • Remains apprised of federal, state, and local compensation laws and regulations in order to ensure University compliance.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resource Management or related discipline and six years of progressively responsible generalist experience including compensation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) preferred; PHR/SPHR certification preferred. 
  • Extensive knowledge of compensation administration, principles, and procedures.
  • Experience with executive compensation preferred.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and make independent decisions.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state wage and salary laws and regulations, including but not limited to Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action, and Americans with Disabilities Act.  
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint); experience with Web design and related software preferred. Familiarity with PeopleSoft is desirable.
  • Knowledge of compensation administration, principles, and procedures.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
  • Ability to interpret and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Skill in analyzing job content and writing accurate job descriptions. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
