Context of the Job:

The University Student Centers (USC) cultivate a vibrant, inclusive, community in which students learn and thrive at the University of Delaware.  As part of the Division of Student Life, the Trabant University Center and the Perkins Student Center serve as the social and educational epicenters for the campus, providing vibrant and intentionally planned engagement opportunities that support USCs’ learning outcomes, but also those of the Division of Student Life and the overall educational aims of UD, as articulated by the General Education purposes and objectives. 

 

The USC team affords every student a path to contribute to the campus community and heighten their sense of belonging through on-campus employment opportunities, nationally recognized leadership development programs, over 400 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and dynamic and engaging campus events and traditions.  The unique cross-functional nature of the department, which includes facilities, events, student organizations, and leadership programs, necessitates that each professional staff member pursues cross-unit collaborations and partnerships, as well as assumes some cross-functional duties and roles, such as opening/closing the facility based on event coverage; rotating evening-duty, serving as a professional advisor to RSOs, and providing programmatic support for department and divisional events.  Collectively and through collaboration, USC team members play a critical role in actualizing the Division of Student Life mission and vision.

 

Under limited supervision of the Technical Coordinator, Performances and Events, the Events Technician II provides technical support for performance events, E-Sports Arena and related tournament events, meetings, and conferences during night and weekend hours.  The work-week schedule for this position is based on the events requiring technical support, typically evening and weekends, however, this position will also assist with some day-time events when additional support to the Technical Coordinator, Performance and Events is needed.

The E-Sports Arena is a state-of-the-art enterprise that will allow UD to compete at a national level in the newly developed Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF) conference and help in admissions recruitment for those interested in competitive gaming.  The space will feature 36 high performing gaming PC’s and a broadcast studio that will accommodate the UD Esports teams as well as the general student body.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Meet with clients on the day of events to confirm and deliver functionality and technical aspects of event. The principal emphasis is on the setup, operation, monitoring and refinement of sound and lighting systems, video display, and computing equipment.
  • Assemble and connect performance audio systems, using analog or digital audio consoles and Crestron smart technology.
  • Design scenes for event lighting via lighting console and operates audio mixing boards for live events.  Monitor and adjust audio and lighting levels during live events/performances/E-Sports events.
  • Maintain inventory of AV-related equipment and provides recommendations to Technical Coordinator of Performances and Events for purchase and replacement. 
  • Maintain safe and clean work environment in all facility spaces and performs routine maintenance on A/V equipment.
  • Supervise, train and orient Student Technicians in the safe and proper use of rigging and audio, video, lighting and all technical equipment utilized to support events/programs/E-Sports. 
  • Serve as event backup in the absence of Student Technicians.
  • Complete minor repairs to lighting and sound technical equipment and coordinates larger repairs with contractors or vendors.
  • Assist with the implementation of assessment and data collection initiatives to assess customer and student satisfaction.
  • Support colleagues in the development and implementation of large-scale programs and events.
  • Ensure compliance with University financial, facilities, safety, and risk management policies and procedures. 
  • Support the work and mission of the Division of Student Life through committees, task forces and special assignments.   
  • Write reports, provide research, and fulfill other projects as assigned by the Director. 

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED with vocational/technical training in theater technology with three years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience with computing hardware connections, basic lighting design, audio and video equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to solve problems under time constraints.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people having varied levels of technical knowledge.
  • Ability to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.  Ability to prioritize work and provide attention to detail.
  • Flexible schedule required.  Must have day, evening, and weekend availability to meet production schedule.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to lift or move, with or without assistance, set pieces, rigging and audio equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to accurately discern colors and the pitch, tone and volume of sound. 
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as need
