CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive student learning and psychological wellbeing program providing a diverse array of services so that students can be more successful in their academic, personal, and career pursuits. The CCSD is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc. (IACS) and sponsors three levels of doctoral training for psychologists including an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral internship in health psychology.

The Center’s efforts focus on helping students reduce psychological symptoms, cope with complicated life events and developmental tasks, improve interpersonal skills and relationships and increase self-knowledge and problem-solving ability. The Center promotes equality and respect for individual and cultural differences, focuses on diversity and inclusion as well as encouraging on-going education regarding issues faced by students in minoritized groups. CCSD is part of the Division of Student Life which contributes to and facilitates critical learning and development within healthy, inclusive and supportive communities so that all students may thrive.

Under the direction of the Director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD), the Associate Director of Training maintains a sophisticated system for overseeing the operations, accreditation and functioning of a multifaceted, comprehensive and dynamic interdisciplinary training program including post-doctoral training, doctoral internship in health psychology, extern training program, and other training efforts as directed. The Associate Director of Training will develop a new arm of the training program to include testing services. The training program is an integral part of CCSD and operates to enhance the clinical work and programming of our counseling center. The Associate Director of Training develops and maintains relationships with students, other faculty, professionals, and staff at the University, as well as community members. Such work is generally highly sensitive and requires thorough familiarity of ethical and legal procedures. In addition, the Associate Director of Training is encouraged to seek leadership roles and additional specialization related to the work done in counseling centers to further their abilities.

The Associate Director of Training has frequent contacts with students, faculty, professionals, and staff at the University as well as community members. In addition, the Associate Director acts as a back up to the Director and Associate Director when they are unavailable and in certain circumstances will take the lead in contacts across campus. Such work is generally highly sensitive and requires thorough familiarity of ethical and legal procedures. In addition, the Associate Director of Training is encouraged to seek leadership roles and additional specialization related to the work done on campus and in counseling centers related to training in order to further their abilities (e.g., via The Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA). The work of the Associate Director supports the University’s mission and vision of comprehensive wellbeing services for students, as well as the strategic initiatives of the Division of Student Life to ensure student success. Members of the Student Life Wellbeing team engage with all aspects of the University community to engender a campus environment that supports health and wellness and creates a foundation for life-long wellbeing by providing Blue Hens with the services, care, and skills to make healthy choices.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Commitment to the Division of Student Life’s values to serve as a guide for interactions and decision-making in Student Health Promotion & Education, and ultimately the collective culture of UD through Amplifying student voices; Pursue equity; Transformational collaboration; Learning and innovation; and Integrity and respect.
  • Serve as an approachable resource for faculty, staff, students, families, and community partners on effective health promotion and education.
  • Serve as a member of the CCSD Leadership Team, work with the Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Directors to formulate department policies and practices. Engage in the development of department-wide goals. Provide insights and direction for the center.
  • Support the director in their role and the implementation of a model and plan for integrating a health equity framework, strategies, and tools into program planning, implementation, and evaluation of priority initiatives.
  • Oversee all aspects of CCSD’s training programs including, but not limited to, program outcomes, teaching and evaluation methods, and accreditation.
  • Develop a testing arm of the training program.
  • Direct the development of and oversee the training program processes including application review, candidate selection, orientation, seminars, curriculum, evaluation, supervision and APA accreditation. Maintain complete training records.
  • Supervise the Assistant Director of Training. Lead or oversee the leadership of the Training Committee.
  • Annually review and revise the training policy manual in accordance with CCSD policies and priorities.  
  • Provide leadership in areas of recruitment of trainees, policy of training programs, training culture strengths and challenges, and how these affect student learning goals.
  • Provide direct and indirect supervision to staff members who are supervising doctoral interns and other trainees as needed, related to issues of supervision and training. This includes developing and overseeing the seminars for trainees as well as staff related to supervision, training and accreditation needs.
  • Provide administrative supervision to staff members as assigned.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of staff training that improves the ability to deliver training and clinical services.
  • Provide clinical supervision to graduate students-in-training at the doctoral and post-doctoral level.
  • Participate in the Division of Student Life and the University mission in a variety of ways, as needed, such as collaborating with other departments on campus, attend university functions, and serve on task forces and committees as assigned.
  • Provide a detailed annual report of the Training program outcomes, submitted to the Director for use in the Annual Report.
  • Provide individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, including assessment, evaluation, and when needed, diagnosis, to undergraduate and graduate students for personal, educational, and psychological problems. Case load as negotiated.
  • Lead a team of CCSD members during a campus or national crisis, under direction from the Director and Associate Director.
  • Lead and serve on committees and/or perform special projects within the center and across campus, as directed.
  • Direct and oversee consultation to students, professionals, faculty, and administrators for issues that have psychological dimensions.
  • On a rotating basis, respond to campus-wide weekday and evening crisis situations including those that are life threatening as the designated University authority for the handling of mental health crisis situations in the University community.
  • Provide and oversee outreach to others on campus as directed. Initiate, develop, and provide student programs designed to enhance the intellectual, social, and personal growth of University students.
  • Provide after hours and weekend coverage at times for performance of outreach and consultation programs and services.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to provide positive leadership and administrative leadership is essential and
  • should be shown through experience, presentations and/or skill in expressing this ability in person in an interview setting.
  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology is required from an academic department accredited by the American Psychological Association.
  • Licensed Psychologist in state of Delaware (or license eligible in Delaware).
  • At least five years of experience post-license working in a college counseling center, preferably a center with a training program and a Doctoral Internship accredited by the American Psychological Association.
  • Demonstrated administrative leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, execute, and complete complex projects within complex systems with limited oversight.
  • Ability to successfully engage stakeholders and foster positive working relationships.
  • Experience with grant writing and grant management.
  • Excellent teaching, publication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in clinical supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and assess training needs.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the development of emerging adults and counseling center administration; organizational and group dynamics, and student development issues and theory.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of cultural competency and the complexities of equity and inclusion is essential and should be shown through graduate coursework, publications, and/or presentations, as well as skill in expressing such knowledge in person in an interview setting.
  • Familiarity with counseling center clinical records and the software platforms utilized.
  • Advanced proficiency in providing, teaching, and supervising others to provide clinical supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and assess training needs.
  • Advanced understanding of state of Delaware Child Abuse Reporting law, FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, and trends in legal liability within college counseling center operations.
  • Proficiency in computer skills (e.g., Titanium, Point and Click, Excel, word processing, presentation software) and web navigation abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Flexible work schedule required.  Position may require early mornings, evening, and weekend hours.
