Postdoctoral Researcher - Materials Science and Engineering

The University of Delaware Center for Hybrid, Active, and Responsive Materials (UD-CHARM) is an NSF-supported Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) supported by the National Science Foundation. UD-CHARM is harnessing the integrated power of computational design, innovative synthetic and manufacturing processes, and nanoscale characterization to unlock the substantial promise of complex synthetic materials at multiple length/time-scales by leveraging strategic control of interfaces, interactions, and synthesis. The center consists of two interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs). Each group is looking for a postdoctoral scholar to work on cross-cutting computational/theoretical aspects of the projects.

Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) 1 will utilize the programmability of peptide molecular structure and chemical sequence, enabled by non-natural amino acid incorporation and processing, to develop new bioinspired materials with targeted architectures and functional properties. In particular, the team will use the power of computational modeling, simulation, and molecule design to target synthetic peptide molecules that fold and assemble into building blocks with targeted protein-like structures, linked together to produce specified nanostructures, motions, and materials properties.  The postdoctoral scholar will use theory and simulation to drive new materials design and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of theory and experimental researchers.

Candidates are expected to have experience with the following:

  • Modeling and simulation of biomolecular systems
  • Theory of biomacromolecules and softmatter
  • Software development

In addition, it will be critical to work well with an interdisciplinary team for maximum success.  Leadership of research teams/collaborations is also a strength.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related discipline. This is a collaborative position that involves teams at the University of Delaware and the University of Pennsylvania with opportunities to work with teams at each institution. The primary work place will be at the University of Pennsylvania. The postdoctoral scholar will report to IRG co-directors and investigators. Each applicant should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae and a list of at least three references. The University of Delaware is committed to diversity in hiring; women and people from diverse cultures and backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Review of applications will begin in mid September 2020 and continue until the position is filled.
