CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Office of Academic Enrichment (OAE) provides tutoring and other academic support for the UD community. The OAE’s mission is to empower students to develop the academic skills and strategies that will pave the way for future success.

Under the general direction of the OAE Academic Program Manager, the Academic Advocate Specialist is responsible for promoting a positive and successful learning experience in an effort to increase student retention, success and degree completion.  The Academic Advocate facilitates one-on-one meetings with undergraduate students to provide holistic academic support as they move toward their academic, personal and professional goals. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide high-touch, individualized support to a student caseload.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies and early outreach plans.
  • Participate in outreach activities (eg., admission events, resource fairs).
  • Provide behavioral coaching for academic success, including time management, goal-setting and learning strategies as well as encouragement and positive reinforcement.
  • Assess individual student needs and make appropriate referrals.
  • Assist students with the challenges of balancing academic life with external commitments and situations that may interfere with their ability to be successful.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress, update student records and maintain summary reports.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support student success. Collaborates with academic administrators to provide information on and targeted intervention strategies for students identified as at-risk.
  • Assist in the development, planning, and facilitation of workshops and other activities.
  • Assist in the development of student peer coaches program.
  • Provide workshops (time management, study skills).
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, special education, psychology or related discipline and three years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a postsecondary setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of student issues in higher education (e.g., access, transition, retention, success).
  • Ability to identify problems, analyze information and implement solutions.
  • Knowledge of study skills development and a wide range of learning strategies.
  • Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion.
  • High energy and enthusiasm for working with students individually and in groups.
  • Excellent oral, written and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build working relationships in a diverse community.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficient computer skills including use of presentation software, Microsoft Office, Social Media and student success tracking platform preferred.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, apply and follow policies and procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, handle frequent interruptions and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment.
